Ch. 8- Newspapers and the Rise of Modern Journalism

1.What are the main points in this chapter?
-The seven different kinds of journalism
-Newspaper circulation has decreased
-Online newspapers vs. print newspapers

2.What evidence does the author provide to support these points?
-Objective journalism, interpretive journalism, advocacy journalism, precision journalism, literary journalism,consensus- oriented journalism, and conflict-oriented journalism.
-Due to a decline in readership for newspapers, the only way to stay in business these days is for the industry to own newspaper chains which are companies that own several different papers throughout the country.
-Online newspapers are taking advantage of the flexibility the internet is offering because space is not an issue so newspapers can post stories and reader letters that they weren't able to print in their paper edition.

3.Is this evidence convincing?
-Yes

4.Would someone with a different world view find this convincing?
-Yes

1. I think it is important to have different kinds of journalism because people always see things in different lights and have different point of views because of the affects of their cultures and home life. Also i feel that certain people probably understand some forms of journalism than other, which would cause them to have more interest in the matter.

2. I think newspaper is not as popular as it use to be because of television. This is because people can receive national and international issues in the comfort of their own homes while sitting on their hind ends on a recliner or couch; you dont have to go out and spend money on them, instead you can watch it passively on television. This in the long run could end up hurting the newspaper industry because if sales go down far enough they will not have enough money produce this product, and it will put thousands to millions of people out of business.

3. The internet now-a-days is containing more information every day and is making it an "all in one" medium for people to access any information from any part of the world. This is affecting print journalism in ways that could lead to less people reading papers and more people getting all of their information online, but in some cases could be misleading because not all websites are credible.

I believe that the reason journalism has stayed afloat with newspapers is by having different forms and hitting every demographic or niche. By adding such specialized sections as the travel section or bringing in opinion pieces it gives everyone something they might be interested in.
I agree with Randi about how television is part of the reason why newspapers have begun to decline. In the television chapter it actually discussed the multiple areas that suffered from the invention of TV. Moreover, i think that the invention the internet was another reason since it made reading the news more convenient.
